Nonprofits in the Era of COVID-19

Ten months into the COVID-19 crisis, nonprofit organizations are still trying to find their way forward. The challenges have been many. Most organizations rely on in-person service delivery models. Switching to virtual or socially distanced programming has worked for some, not so much for others. Fundraising has been equally as challenging in 2020. Getting past the noise of the pandemic and an acrimonious election has been daunting, plus some donors are holding back dollars, either because of uncertainty or economic hardship. As a result, layoffs and services cuts have been common as organizations struggle to stay in the black.

With so much emphasis on surviving rather than thriving, the nonprofit leadership landscape has changed, too. Thanks to a solid economy, the past several years saw a high volume of executive transition. In many cases, Baby Boomer execs decided it was time to retire…or maybe try something new and less taxing. The turnover created many opportunities for the next generation of nonprofit leaders to ascend to executive roles.

COVID-19 initially put a damper on nonprofit transition as leaders hunkered down and tried to muddle through the mess rather than think about new opportunities. That is about to change. Too many execs are ready for retirement or new challenges and too many organizations are hungry for a shot of energy and fresh ideas. It looks like 2021 is going to be a big year for nonprofit executive opportunities.

That is why we are so excited to launch Empower Nonprofit Executive Search right now. By offering an affordable, nonprofit-focused services, we are confident that we can help many organizations confidently navigate the transition in their future. Plus, we will put to work everything that we have learned in 2020, including the fact that videoconference meetings are efficient and virtual interviews are effective. Yes, we had to work online in 2020, but we will want to work online in the future.
